You Are Consciousness – Eckhart Tolle Retreat Day 1
‘You are consciousness. Consciousness is like the light of the sun. What the sun is, is for you to find out.’ With these words Eckhart Tolle concludes the first session of the retreat in Coolum, Sunshine Coast Australia. After the words Tolle tings his tibetan bells: ting ting ting … Ting ting ting … The sound takes the audience of 520 people from all over the world into a deep silence. We are all present. The retreat has began.
During this first session Eckhart tells a story of a monk who was sent into the world with a special assignment: ‘Whatever you encounter; whatever you are presented with – each and every time say: “Thank you for everything, I have no complaints whatsoever”, no matter whether your experience is pleasant or unpleasant.’
Feeling grateful for whatever life gives us, releases resistance and allows for Presence in the moment. It is easy to feel grateful when we are in a beautiful environment surrounded by people and things we like. When we are able to feel grateful even in the worst situations, we accept everything the way it is, and the situation can easily change, whereas when we resist a situation, we somehow cling to it, and it is likely to remain the same.
In the coming days many participants are practicing this exercise. There is a lot of laughter. People imagine situations they dislike such as an argument with their spouse, and imagine saying ‘Thank you very much, I have no complaints whatsoever’ during the argument. It feels funny, and a bit alien. But we get that in doing so, the whole argument will shift and change into an experience that is no longer terrible or bad, but acceptable and even good – and it being okay, it will stir peace instead of anger or fear, and it will naturally dissolve into peace. We understand the concept of it. We also understand that it will take a lot of practice for most of us, to really actually do it and say those words, when we find ourselves in an unpleasant situation.
Thank you for everything, I have no complaints whatsoever. Day 1 is wonderful, promising and fulfilling. To be like the light of the sun – to be consciousness in gratitude is easy today.
